Internship Impact
Please describe the work you performed during this internship:
During the internship, I had the opportunity to work with two Infectious Disease specialist, Dr. Stephens and Dr. Katners. I had the chance to observe clinical research from a clinician's perspective and also understand "behind the scene" work from project planning to legal document drafting and submission. I helped the nurses at the center drafting some documents ( screening, protocol, reimbursement form, etc). I also present my poster about a new recent HIV treatment Cabenuva at the school symposium and got the honorable mention award
What did you accomplish through this internship and how has it impacted your personal and professional development?
I had the chance to observe how Dr. Stephens and Dr. Kanters took care of their patients. With the stigma that patients with HIV still have to struggle with, it requires an extra level of professionalism and empathy to be able to provide them with the best possible care. I am interested in Internal medicine and this experience gave me a better understanding about a branch of Internal medicine.
How has this internship influenced your thoughts about your next internship or pre-professional experience? What skills would you still like to develop?
This internship solidifies my interest in Internal Medicine. The summer scholar is only available for M1 (first year med students) and I plan to start another project next summer. My next project is Snack attack in which I would go to local schools to teach students how to eat healthy and make healthy food as well as provided ways to lose weight (dancing, yoga, etc). One of the most crucial skill that I want to develop is how to engage and gain trust from the people I interact with.
How did you, or will you, use the funds received to benefit your personal and professional development?
I will save the funds received to fund my future project (snack attack) as well as saving for fees to take the national board exams, fees for residency application, etc.
Would you recommend this site to another scholar as a location for future internships?
